Leiden poisoner Goeie Mie inspired Leidse Bal
Leiden had 'Goeie Mie' (or Maria Swanenburg, 1839-1915) in its city history. In three years, Goeie Mie (with a soft hand and a sweet smile) poisoned more than 90 fellow citizens to collect insurance money and thus enrich themselves. Goeie Mie Gin , the characteristic gin of Leiden, made with organic, botanical ingredients (including elderberry blossom), gives The Leiden Ball its surprising finesse and individuality.
